  1. v0.4.0, released March 31, 2010.
  2. Cloudera Desktop 0.4.0 is a significant update from the previous version 0.3.0.
  3. This release introduces the Cloudera Desktop SDK, a way to plug in your own
  4. applications that leverage the Cloudera Desktop environment. Another new
  5. feature is Beeswax, a front-end application for interacting with Hive. It also
  6. represents many bug fixes and a re-working of the "Job Browser" and "File
  7. Browser" applications.
  8. NEW FEATURES
  9. - Beeswax, a UI for Hive
  10. Beeswax is an application for managing and using Hive. It allows users
  11. to create tables, load data, and query the warehouse, all from their
  12. browser.
  13. - The Cloudera Desktop SDK
  14. It is now possible to add your own applications into Cloudera Desktop,
  15. integrated with the windowing system and the other applications.
  16. To get started, see the SDK documentation.
  17. - File Editor
  18. It is now possible to edit (small, text) files directly from the File Browser.
  19. This is particularly handy for editing small configuration files.
  20. - "About" Application
  21. Reachable by clicking the Cloudera "feather" in the upper lefthand corner,
  22. the about application displays the current configuration.
  23. IMPROVEMENTS
  24. - File Browser
  25. The File Browser has been re-architected on top of the SDK.
  26. Changing permissions and changing file ownership is now possible.
  27. Performance on large directories is improved.
  28. - Job Browser
  29. The Job Browser has been re-architected on top of the SDK.
  30. There have been several performance improvements in handling
  31. large jobs.
  32. - Job Designer
  33. You may register for e-mail notifications when jobs you
  34. submit have completed.
  35. - Session Restore
  36. Windows that were open when you last logged out are
  37. opened again automatically when you log back in.
  38. - Support for privileged ports and SSL.
  39. You can now run Desktop on port 80, and, optionally, with SSL (see the FAQ).
  40. - Cleaner SDK Model for "JFrame"
  41. Most requests within Cloudera Desktop are now, under the covers,
  42. simple GET and POST requests which return HTML.
  43. - SDK-Friendly Build System
  44. The build system has been adapted to support third-party applications
  45. and dependencies gracefully.
  46. - Users can now change their own passwords.
  47. - Keyboard Shortcuts
  48. A list of available shortcuts is available in the top right corner (click the
  49. "command" icon).
  50. - Usage without Hadoop
  51. Cloudera Desktop will run if Hadoop is unavailable, though
  52. some applications will be limited in functionality.
  53. - Frontend Javascript Performance and Compatibility
  54. Many improvements in windowing performance.
  55. KEY BUG FIXES
  56. - Creating a "home directory" while creating the user in the user manager
  57. no longer produces an error.
  58. - Dates and times are now displayed in a specific timezone, which is configurable.
  59. - Inactive users are not able to login.
  60. - The Job Designer appropriately configures hadoop.tmp.dir; this fixes
  61. some permissions denied errors.
  62. - File upload is more robust.
  63. KNOWN BUGS
  64. - After a successful upload with Linux's flash player (which may warn you about
  65. hanging your computer), the upload screen does not clear. Click the red
  66. (x) button to clear it.
  67. - Configuring the web server to listen on port 80 does not work if you are
  68. using the RPM or Debian packages. This is due to the init scripts
  69. improperly dropping root privileges before calling the supervisor. This
  70. has been fixed in release 0.4.1.
